eBay SEO

eBay's help pages name seven things its Best Match search weighs when it ranks a listing: how closely it matches the search, how popular the item is, its price, the quality of the listing, how complete it is, its terms such as returns and handling time, and the seller's track record.

The short answer

  • eBay's Best Match search weighs 7 factors, and the ones you control most are your title words, item specifics, photos, price, and your returns and handling terms.
  • Use as many of the title's 80 characters as you can on the brand, model, size, color and model number buyers actually type.
  • Fill in every required item specific and the recommended ones, which the listing form ranks by buyer searches over the past 30 days, because filtered searches only show listings that have the matching specific.
  • Add several photos, up to 24 free, with at least one that is 500 pixels on its longest side and no borders, text or watermarks.

eBay SEO means working on those seven factors so your listing shows up when a buyer searches for what you sell. Everything below comes from eBay's own help, policy and Seller Center pages, read on November 3, 2026.

Where a number comes from eBay's own analysis or from a tool seller, the page says so.

How eBay's Best Match search ranks listings

Best Match is eBay's default sort. eBay calls it "the formula eBay uses to sort listings" and lists its factors, but it doesn't publish how much each one counts.

So anyone who tells you the exact weight of a factor is guessing.

Best Match factor (eBay's words)What you control
How closely the listing matches the buyer's search termsTitle words, category, item specifics
How popular the item isLittle directly; it builds as listings get clicks and sales
The item's pricePrice and shipping cost against similar listings
The quality of the listing, such as description and photosPhotos, description
How complete the listing isRequired and recommended item specifics, product identifiers
The listing's terms, such as return policy and handling timeReturns window, handling time
The seller's track recordShipping on time, tracking, accurate descriptions

eBay's buyer help page adds three factors you can't control:

The same page says promoted listings that match the search can appear higher. That's the paid route around Best Match.

eBay gives you 80 characters, and its Seller Center says to use as many as you can. eBay's search looks for titles that closely match the words typed, so the title has to contain the words a buyer would actually use.

eBay's international seller guide suggests this order:

  1. Condition, when the item is new
  2. Brand
  3. Product name
  4. Model number
  5. Variants such as size and color
  6. Any remaining keyword

Leave out special characters and words that don't describe the item. The same guide says writing whole words in capital letters, or putting asterisks and other markers between words, can hurt ranking.

Weak: **L@@K** VINTAGE LEVIS JEANS GREAT COND!!!
Better: Levi's 501 Original Fit Jeans 34x30 Medium Wash Button Fly

The second title spends its characters on the brand, the model, the size and the wash, which are the words people type and the filters they click.

eBay's guide also says titles over 60 characters have a 1.5 times greater chance of selling. That's eBay's own observational number, and sellers who write full titles probably also take better photos and fill in more details, so treat it as a reason to use the space rather than a promise.

TipTo find the words buyers use, search the item on eBay, filter to sold listings and read the titles that sold. Product Research in Seller Hub, covered below, does the same across 3 years of sales.

For the full listing walk-through, see how to list on eBay, and for reusable formats, see the eBay listing template guide.

Item specifics and search filters

Item specifics are the brand, size, color, style and other fields in the listing form. eBay's Seller Center says buyers use them to filter search results, and your item only appears in a filtered search if you added the matching item specific.

A buyer who searches "jeans" and then ticks size 34 never sees your pair of 34s if the size field is blank.

The same page says complete item specifics raise the chance of being found on eBay, Google Shopping and other search engines. Our eBay item specifics guide goes field by field.

Product identifiers such as UPCs, ISBNs and manufacturer part numbers (MPNs) do a similar job for new and branded goods. Enter one, and eBay suggests a match from its catalog if the product already exists there.

Pick the exact match. eBay says a similar but wrong version, such as a model from a different year, misleads buyers, and that the right catalog entry can cut return requests.

Photos that meet eBay's rules

The policy bans photos with added borders, added text or artwork, watermarks of any kind, placeholder images, and stock photos for used, damaged or defective items. eBay asks you to shoot from every angle and to show flaws and scratches.

eBay's international seller guide reports that in a review of 6.8 million listings, those with better photo quality were up to 5% more likely to sell, where "better" meant 500 pixels or more on the longest side with no added text or graphics. That's eBay's own analysis with no published method, so read it as direction rather than a measured effect.

Price, shipping, returns and seller performance

Price is a Best Match factor. eBay's advice is to price competitively against similar items using the Product Research tool in Seller Hub.

eBay's Seller Center notes that buyers prefer free shipping but that it may not work for every item, and it suggests offering it on the listings where it costs you least. Shipping you charge the buyer still counts toward eBay's fees, which you can check in the eBay fee calculator.

Returns and handling time are part of the listing's terms, which Best Match weighs, and they also decide Top Rated Plus. Once your account is Top Rated, listings that offer same-day or one-business-day handling and free returns for 30 days or longer get the Top Rated Plus seal, which eBay displays in search results, and a fee discount.

10%The discount on final value fees eBay gives Top Rated Plus listings, on top of the seal it shows in search results.

To be Top Rated, eBay requires:

eBay says Top Rated Sellers get "enhanced visibility" in search, without saying how.

Format matters too. eBay suggests fixed price when you want an item in front of buyers for more than 10 days, and an auction when you're unsure of the value and want a quick sale.

What doesn't help: keyword stuffing and banned tactics

Watch outeBay's search manipulation policy says, "Using keywords that are not directly related to the item for sale is not allowed." eBay can remove the listing, issue a warning, restrict your account or suspend it.

Putting "Gucci" or "Coach" in the title of an unbranded bag to catch those searches is the classic case. The policy also bans:

For accessories, the words "fits," "for" or "compatible with" go before the name of the item it works with, but they aren't allowed before brand names of jewelry, clothing and accessories. Vehicle parts should use eBay's parts compatibility tool, and compatible vehicles shouldn't go in the title.

Stuffing also fails on its own terms. A title crammed with unrelated words has fewer of the words that match what this buyer typed.

How eBay listings show up in Google

eBay listings reach Google in two ways.

The first is free. eBay says its own search engine, Cassini, and outside search engines both check listings for keywords that match the search, and its item specifics page says complete specifics help listings get found on Google Shopping and other search results.

Google Shopping lets people compare products directly on Google's results page. Product identifiers help there too, because in eBay's words, "search machines know exactly what you are selling."

The second is paid. Promoted Offsite places your fixed price listings as ads on outside channels such as Google, and you pay per click.

eBay's guidance on descriptions is the same for both engines: write keywords into normal sentences instead of comma-separated lists, because spamming can get listings filtered out.

eBay SEO tools that use eBay's own data

The most useful eBay SEO tool is free and already in Seller Hub. Product Research, which eBay used to call Terapeak, sits under the Research tab, and eBay describes it as free to all sellers. It covers the last 3 years of eBay sales and shows:

Reading the titles and specifics of what sold is the fastest way to learn the words buyers use. Our guide to what sells best on eBay shows how to turn those numbers into a sell-through rate.

Sourcing Insights, in the same tab, shows high-demand categories and the item specifics that get the most impressions and clicks. It needs a Basic Store subscription or higher.

Paid third-party tools sell keyword lists and title scores. Their claims about what ranks come from the companies selling the tools, and none of them has eBay's ranking formula.

We compare those apps in the best reselling apps. If you source at thrift stores, the thrift flipping guide covers checking an item's sold price before you buy it.

eBay SEO checklist before you list

  1. Use close to 80 characters: brand, model, type, size, color and model number, in normal capitalization.
  2. Pick the most specific category, then fill in every required item specific and as many recommended ones as apply.
  3. Add the UPC, ISBN or MPN when the item has one, and choose the exact catalog match.
  4. Upload several photos of at least 500 pixels (about 1,600 is better) on a plain background, with flaws shown and no text or borders.
  5. Check sold prices in Product Research and price against them.
  6. Offer returns and the shortest handling time you can keep, and ship on time with tracking.
  7. Leave out any brand or keyword that doesn't describe this exact item.
