The short answer
- eBay's Focus Categories, which are collectibles, eBay Motors, fashion and refurbished goods, grew 26% in the second quarter of 2026 and made up more than 40% of eBay's sales.
- Collectibles were eBay's largest source of growth in that quarter, led by trading cards, and TCGplayer passed $1 billion in sales over the 12 months reported in the third quarter.
- Category growth is counted in dollars, so check your own item with its sell-through rate: sold listings from eBay's last 90 days, divided by sold plus active listings.
- Fees decide which items pay: eBay takes 13.6% in most categories, 15.3% on books, movies and music, and 8% on athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more.
That answer comes from eBay Inc.'s investor filings rather than from a list of "hot items."
The rest of this page covers what eBay's numbers say, what they can't tell you about your own item, and how to check whether a specific item sells before you buy or list it.
What eBay's own numbers say sells
eBay sold $79.6 billion of goods in 2025, up 7% from $74.7 billion in 2024, according to its annual report (10-K). At the end of 2025 it had 135 million active buyers and 2.5 billion live listings, and 51% of its sales were outside the United States.
The 10-K says sales in its Focus Categories grew faster than the rest of the marketplace. It names them as:
- Collectibles
- Motors Parts & Accessories
- Luxury
- Refurbished
- Apparel and Sneakers
It adds that US growth had "particularly strong performance in Collectibles." The second-quarter 2026 earnings presentation breaks the Focus Categories down further:
| Category | What eBay reported for Q2 2026 |
|---|---|
| Collectibles | Largest contributor to eBay's sales growth, led by trading cards; more than 80 million AI-powered card scans |
| eBay Motors parts and accessories | Contributed nearly 2 points of total sales growth |
| Fashion | Growth mostly from luxury and pre-loved items; Authenticity Guarantee extended to 100+ fashion brands |
| Refurbished | Counted in "recommerce" (pre-owned plus refurbished), which grew more than 20% |
| All Focus Categories | Up 26% year over year, over 40% of total sales |
The third quarter kept the same shape. eBay reported $23.2 billion in sales for the quarter ending September 30, 2026, up 15%, with US sales of $12.5 billion, up 27%.
- TCGplayer, eBay's trading card marketplace, passed $1 billion in sales over the trailing 12 months.
- Goldin, its high-end collectibles auction house, had another record quarter.
eBay's Seller Center page on what to sell names three popular categories: vehicles and parts, trading cards and pre-loved fashion.
What these numbers can't tell you
Category growth answers a different question from the one a seller has. eBay reports gross merchandise volume, which is dollars of goods sold, and it says nothing about how many units sold, what share of listings found a buyer, or what the seller kept after fees.
Some growth also comes from buying companies. eBay completed its purchase of Depop, a fashion resale app, on July 30, 2026, so third-quarter fashion and buyer numbers include sales that weren't on eBay a year earlier.
Other numbers that get repeated as "what sells" measure something else again:
- A figure that electronics make up 16.4% of eBay listings, which eBay's international seller guide cites from ZIK Analytics, a company that sells eBay research software, counts what sellers list. That's supply, not demand.
- eBay's year-end collectibles release said searches for Labubu rose 2,600% in January to October 2025 versus a year earlier. That's search interest, which can rise just as fast when there are too few items to buy as when there are many.
- eBay's 2026 Recommerce Report found that 47% of people surveyed buy secondhand at least monthly. It was an eBay-commissioned online survey of 10,522 people in 10 countries who already buy secondhand goods.
None of this makes the numbers wrong. They tell you what sells on eBay at the level of whole categories, which is where buyers are spending.
The best things to resell are narrower than that, so you still have to check whether your specific item, in your condition, at your price, sells.
eBay's focus categories, one by one
Collectibles and trading cards
eBay named collectibles, led by trading cards, as the largest contributor to its sales growth in the second quarter of 2026.
- eBay charges 13.25% on sports trading cards and collectible card games up to $7,500, slightly under the 13.6% it charges in most categories.
- Cards with a Buy It Now price of $200 or more, or that sell at auction for $200 or more, go through eBay's Authenticity Guarantee, where an authenticator checks the card before it ships to the buyer.
- eBay's most-searched trading card sets of January to October 2025 included Pokémon Prismatic Evolutions, Pokémon Destined Rivals and Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy.
Motors parts and accessories
eBay's international seller guide says vehicle parts and accessories bring in more than $10 billion a year and that one in three eBay shoppers worldwide buys from the category. eBay doesn't give a date or source for either figure.
Parts sell on fit, so eBay's parts compatibility tool and the manufacturer part number matter more than the title. eBay's rules keep the list of compatible vehicles out of the title.
Luxury
Handbags listed or sold at $500 or more, jewelry at $500 or more and watches at $2,000 or more go through Authenticity Guarantee. Fees in these categories run higher:
- 15% on women's handbags up to $2,000, and 9% above it
- 15% on jewelry up to $5,000
- 15% on watches up to $1,000, dropping to 6.5% on the portion between $1,000 and $7,500
Refurbished
eBay's 10-K describes its eBay Refurbished program as offering inventory from verified brands, and the international seller guide lists seller requirements that include at least 98% positive feedback.
For most resellers, refurbished means buying broken or used electronics, testing or repairing them, and stating the condition precisely.
Pre-loved fashion and sneakers
eBay said fashion growth in mid-2026 came mostly from luxury and pre-loved items. Its spring 2026 trend release, based on March 2026 against March 2025 global data, reported demand for Levi's boot cut jeans up 67%.
Men's and women's athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more pay an 8% fee with no per-order fee, against 13.6% for shoes that sell for less.
How to check sell-through yourself
Sell-through rate is the share of listings for an item that actually sold over a period. It tells you whether a buyer exists at your price, and you can measure it for free in two places.
With eBay's sold listings filter
- Search for the exact item on eBay and turn on the Sold items filter. eBay's help page says those results cover only listings that ended with a sale in the previous 90 days.
- Count the sold results.
- Turn the filter off and count the active listings for the same search.
TipNarrow both searches the same way, with the same size, condition and model. A sold count for "Levi's jeans" tells you nothing about your pair of 501s in 34x30.
With Product Research (Terapeak) in Seller Hub
Product Research sits under the Research tab in Seller Hub, and eBay's Seller Center describes it as free to all sellers. It shows the last 3 years of eBay sales for millions of items, including:
- average sold price and sold price range
- average shipping cost and how many listings offered free shipping
- how many sellers sold the item, and which selling format sold
It also gives its own sell-through rate, which eBay defines as "the percentage of similar items sold during a specific period of time," for searches covering the last 90 days or less. You can filter by condition, category and brand, and exclude words with a minus sign.
The sell-through formula, with a worked example
The formula most resellers use is sold divided by sold plus active. It's a practitioner formula, not one eBay publishes.
Sell-through rate = sold ÷ (sold + active) Example: a search for one specific jacket, used, one size Sold in the last 90 days: 45 Active listings right now: 105 Sell-through = 45 ÷ (45 + 105) = 45 ÷ 150 = 30% Same numbers as months of supply: 45 sold ÷ 3 months = 15 sold a month 105 active ÷ 15 a month = 7 months to sell what's listed
The months-of-supply view is often easier to act on. At 15 sales a month against 105 listings, a new listing at a typical price joins a queue that takes about 7 months to clear, unless it's priced lower or presented better than the rest.
The formula has known weak spots:
- It compares 90 days of sales against one day's count of active listings.
- The same item relisted several times can be counted more than once.
- A few dozen sales is a small sample.
Run the numbers on two or three close variations and look for agreement before you trust one.
The most profitable items to sell on eBay, after fees
The most profitable items to sell on eBay are the ones with the widest gap between what you paid and what you keep. An item that sells fast can still lose money.
eBay's final value fee is charged on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, the shipping the buyer pays and sales tax. On top of that comes $0.40 per order over $10 ($0.30 at $10 or less).
| Category | Final value fee |
|---|---|
| Most categories, up to $7,500 | 13.6% |
| Sports trading cards and collectible card games, up to $7,500 | 13.25% |
| Books, movies and TV, music, up to $7,500 | 15.3% |
| Athletic shoes, sale of $150 or more (no per-order fee) | 8% |
| Women's handbags, up to $2,000 | 15% |
| Jewelry, up to $5,000 | 15% |
Run your own numbers in the eBay fee calculator before you buy inventory. If you source secondhand, the thrift flipping guide works through the math of a full flip with a worked example.
Once you know an item sells, eBay SEO covers getting your listing in front of the buyers searching for it.
