The short answer
- eBay tags every item specific with one of 4 labels, Required, Required Soon, Recommended or Additional, and a listing can’t be published until every Required one is filled in.
- Buyers filter search results by item specifics, and Seller Hub shows how often buyers searched for each one over the past 30 days, so you can see which Recommended ones are worth filling in.
- In eBay’s published requirements files, a men’s T-shirt needs 5 required specifics and men’s athletic shoes need 7, including US Shoe Size and Upper Material.
- After August 26, 2026, eBay may hide clothing and shoe listings from buyers until their size matches one of its standard values.
What item specifics are
eBay calls item specifics descriptive keywords that tell a buyer about your item. Each one is a field in the listing form with a name and a value, such as Brand: Levi’s or Size: 34x30.
Depending on what you sell, they cover brand, size, dimensions, type, color, style and more. Together with product identifiers like UPCs and ISBNs, eBay presents them as the most important way to help buyers find an item.
They do a different job from the title. The title is the 80 characters a buyer reads in search results, while item specifics are the structured fields eBay’s search filters read from, and a listing needs both. Our eBay SEO guide covers the title side.
Required, Required Soon, Recommended and Additional
The listing form tags every item specific with one of four labels, so you know what to fill in first. A lightning bolt meter shows how complete your specifics are.
| Label | What eBay says it means | If you leave it blank |
|---|---|---|
| Required | Details that are critical to identifying the item so buyers can shop with confidence | The listing can’t be published, and a new or revised listing must have every one |
| Required Soon | Specifics eBay is about to make required, based on what buyers search for | The listing shows a note with the date the specific becomes required |
| Recommended | Specifics eBay picks from buyer demand data and popular searches | The listing posts, but it misses filtered searches for that detail |
| Additional | Details that help buyers know more about the item | The listing posts, and buyers may send you more questions |
Additional is eBay’s word for what most sellers call optional. In some categories you must pick a value from eBay’s own list, and in others you can type your own name or value.
How item specifics affect search and filters
eBay says buyers use item specifics to filter their search results, and your item only appears in those filtered results if you’ve added the matching specific. eBay’s mobile-friendly guide says the same: listings that skip the category’s item specifics may be left out of filtered searches.
TipFill in the size even when it’s already in the title. A pair of jeans with no Size specific won’t show up for a buyer who filters for size 34x30, however good the title is.
eBay lists three benefits of filling them in:
- Better visibility in eBay search results
- More chances of being found on eBay, Google Shopping and other search engines
- A better chance of turning up when buyers filter, especially on phones
eBay gives no figures for any of these on its item specifics page, so read them as eBay’s description of how search works, not a measured result.
Accuracy counts as much as completeness. eBay’s listing advice for electronics says to use product identifiers that match the exact product, because a similar but wrong version, such as a model from a different year, can mislead buyers.
Required item specifics by category
eBay’s Seller Center publishes downloadable spreadsheets of required item specifics by category. The rows below come from two of them: the Clothes, Shoes & Accessories file from eBay’s Spring 2021 update and the Media file from its Fall 2021 update.
eBay adds new required specifics over time, so a category may ask for more today than these files list.
| eBay category | ID | Required item specifics |
|---|---|---|
| Men’s Clothing > Shirts > T-Shirts | 15687 | Brand, Color, Department, Size, Type |
| Men’s Clothing > Jeans | 11483 | Brand, Color, Department, Size, Style, Type |
| Men’s Activewear > Hoodies & Sweatshirts | 155183 | Brand, Color, Department, Size, Style, Type |
| Women’s Bags & Handbags | 169291 | Brand, Color, Department, Material, Style |
| Men’s Shoes > Athletic Shoes | 15709 | Brand, Color, Department, Style, Type, Upper Material, US Shoe Size |
| Women’s Shoes > Athletic Shoes | 95672 | Brand, Color, Department, Style, Type, Upper Material, US Shoe Size |
| Women’s Shoes > Heels | 55793 | Brand, Color, Department, Style, Type, Upper Material, US Shoe Size |
| Books | 261186 | Author, Book Title, Language, ISBN |
| CDs | 176984 | Album Name, Artist, Format, UPC |
| Vinyl Records | 176985 | Album Name, Artist, Format, UPC |
| DVDs & Blu-ray Discs | 617 | Format, Movie/TV Title, UPC |
The pattern is easy to see:
- Every clothing and shoe row needs Brand, Color and Department.
- Shoes swap Size for US Shoe Size and add Upper Material.
- Media needs the title, usually the author or artist, and the ISBN or UPC.
eBay’s requirements page has no file for Video Games & Consoles, so for games and consoles the listing form itself is the place to check.
For smartphones, eBay’s listing advice names the specifics buyers look for: network, camera resolution, screen size, operating system, lock status, processor, connectivity, RAM, SIM card slot, contract and features.
Clothing and shoe sizes after August 26, 2026
eBay checks the required Size field on apparel and footwear listings against its own list of standard sizes. The supported values are the ones in the Size drop-down of the listing form, and they vary by category, by eBay site and, in the US, by size type.
Before August 26, 2026, eBay updated existing listings where it could confidently match a size, such as changing “Medium” to “M” or “Lg” to “L”.
Watch outWhen eBay can’t match a size, the listing may not be visible to buyers until you pick a supported value. Good ’Til Cancelled listings stay out of search until the size is fixed.
eBay emails affected sellers and lists those listings in the Issue Resolution Center in Seller Hub. If you list through the API, send a valid Size Type and Size pair when both are required, never just one of them.
How to find what your category requires
Start with the listing form. Once you pick a category, it prompts you for the required details, such as size, color, brand and style, and marks the rest as Recommended or Additional.
That’s why the category step matters, and our guide on how to list on eBay covers it.
For listings that are already live, Seller Hub shows you the gaps:
- The Tasks module on the Overview page tells you when listings are missing required item specifics.
- The Active listings page has Quick Filters for listings missing Required, Required Soon or Recommended specifics.
- Seller Hub shows how many times buyers searched for each specific over the past 30 days.
To fix many listings at once, eBay’s help page gives these steps:
- Open your Active listings page in Seller Hub.
- Select Download, then Missing required or recommended item specifics.
- Open the downloaded file and read the Instructions tab.
- Choose values from the drop-down menus, or add your own.
- Save the file and upload it.
Developers can ask eBay directly. The Taxonomy API’s getItemAspectsForCategory method returns every item specific for a leaf category, and when its aspectRequired field is true, that specific is required.
Item specifics in listings with variations
Variations let one listing hold closely related items that differ by an item specific, such as one pair of shoes in several sizes.
- eBay’s example is a kitchen faucet sold in stainless steel, bronze and chrome, where the variation specific should be Finish, not Type.
- Different products, such as a hammer, a wrench and a screwdriver, have to be listed separately.
- If a variation uses a specific eBay no longer accepts, the form shows the error “This attribute is not valid for this variation. Add a valid attribute.”
Write the description after the specifics, because by then the facts are already in front of you. Our eBay listing template guide has copyable descriptions, and the eBay fee calculator shows what you keep when the item sells.
